Using the E-Book: This multimedia e-book is designed to promote the development of reading fluency and English language learning. The e-book can be adjusted so that the user can follow along with the computer voiceover, or can read aloud along with the voiceover.

The book will open in a new window in your browser. If you do not get the new window when you click the Book Cover, please check your browser security. You must allow the pop-up window from this site in order to read the book. Check your settings under "Tools" for Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox or Netscape. Some browser settings will cause the pop-up to bring along various tool bars, reducing the screen space for the book. Windows users can use Function Key 11 <F11> as a toggle to turn these menus off and on. Also, this site uses JavaScript. Please be certain that it is not disabled. If you have continuing problems, please contact us.

To turn a page, move the cursor to the outside corner of the book. The cursor will have an arrow shape. Click and the page will turn, or click-and-drag to control the page turn.

To begin reading the book, move the mouse cursor over the book text. The cursor will turn to a hand Hand icon over the text. Click on the text to play the voiceover audio.

The page turning animations use substantial graphics resources. Most modern computers will play the page turns gracefully. They will be slower on some older computers. The audio files are compressed and will download quickly with broadband access to the internet.

Controlling the Timing: The user can control both the synchrony of the audio and text highlighting, and the overall effective rate of the audio.

To change the synchrony of the text highlighting, use the arrow buttons above the right-hand page. The right button will increase the advance of the highlighting relative to the audio; the left button will decrease it. To read aloud in chorus with the voiceover it will be helpful to advance the highlighting into the 0.6 - 1.0 range.

To change the overall play rate of the audio, use the arrow buttons above the left-hand page. The right button will increase the length of the pauses in the reading. At 2.0 this will slow the reading by about 25 words per minute.
