Using the E-Book: This multimedia e-book is designed to promote the development of reading fluency and comprehension. It can be adjusted to follow along as the author reads, or for the user to read aloud along with the author. The audio files are compressed and will download quickly with broadband access to the internet.

The book will open in a new window in your browser. If you do not get the new window when you click the "Read the Book" button, please check your browser security. You must allow the pop-up window from this site in order to read the book. Check your settings under "Tools" for Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox or Netscape. Also, this site uses JavaScript. The page turning animations use substantial graphics resources. Most modern computers will play the page turns gracefully. They will be slower on some older computers.

To turn a page, move the cursor to the outside corner of the book. The cursor will have an arrow shape. Click and the page will turn, or click-and-drag to control the page turn.

To begin reading the book, move the mouse cursor over the book text. The cursor will turn to a hand hand cursor icon over the text. Click on the text to play the voiceover audio.

For quick access to each chapter, click on the Chapter Title on the "Contents" page.

The book is designed to play on a 1024 x 768 pixel screen. It will adjust itself to play on an 800 x 600 pixel screen. Some computers that are set to 800 x 600 will also support higher resolution. Consult the Screen Test link above. Higher resolution will provide more readable text.

Controlling the Timing: The user can control both the synchrony of the audio and text highlighting, and the overall effective rate of the audio.

To change the synchrony of the text highlighting, use the arrow buttons above the right-hand page. The right button will increase the advance of the highlighting relative to the audio; the left button will decrease it. To read aloud in chorus with Tom Brokaw it will be helpful to advance the highlighting into the 0.6 - 1.0 range.

To change the overall play rate of the audio, use the arrow buttons above the left-hand page. The right button will increase the length of the pauses in the reading. At 2.0 this will slow the reading by about 25 words per minute: from about 160 words per minute to about 135 words per minute.

About the Book: "I am in awe of [the men and women chronicled in this book]. I feel privileged to have been a witness to their lives and their sacrifices. As I came to know many of them and their stories, I became more convinced ... that this is the greatest generation any society has produced." Tom Brokaw
